The average Joe on the street, if asked, has no idea when the books of the OT were actually written down and could probably name no more than 5 or 10 OT books before spluttering to the ground from the mental strain of recollection. Indeed, I have encountered many people (atheists, New Agers - even Christians) who didn't know when specific parts of the OT were written (neither liberal nor conservative dating); there was only a vague notion of "thousands of years ago." And is this so hard to believe, in an era when, in a Gallup survey, 42 percent of people couldn't name the person who delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and some even thought that it was delivered from horseback? (And this was in America; in some countries, China for example, there are demonstrably people who don't even know that there is an Old or New Testament!)"
