Gingrich the flip-flopper

Apparently, he called for an immediate no-fly zone on the 7th, and then condemned Obama for instituting a no-fly zone on the 23rd. That's integrity right there.

The stigma of taking public money

Even corporations are ashamed!

As it turns out, the information about Morgan Stanley (MS)’s $3.5 billion discount-window loan has been sitting on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission’s website since last month. The panel didn’t mention it in its final report. And nobody had written a story about it before. So there: Now it can be told.

. . . .

The Fed’s arguments for keeping this sort of data secret were transparently bogus. One Fed economist, Brian Madigan, said in an affidavit that disclosing discount-window borrowers’ names “can quickly place an institution in a weakened condition vis- a-vis its competitors by causing a loss of public confidence in the institution, a sudden outflow of deposits (a ‘run’), a loss of confidence by market analysts, a drop in the institution’s stock price, and a withdrawal of market sources of liquidity.”

Another theocrat

In the preceding weeks, he had heard arguments on the subject from prosecutors who spoke of the death penalty’s deterrent effect and from the grieving relatives of murder victims who saw in it fierce justice. He had reacquainted himself with about 20 capital cases overturned by DNA evidence or tainted by judicial error.

But on that decisive morning of March 9, he laid aside the secular factors and opened his Bible to a passage in II Corinthians about human imperfection. He prayed. And when he signed the bill striking down the death penalty, he cited one influence by name: Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago.

Teaching critical thinking to Holocaust deniers

Now that is an impressive piece of work.

In an effort to get my students to engage in true critical thinking, I have developed a capstone essay assignment for my critical thinking course. The idea for the assignment came to me after hearing that a former colleague, who has a Ph.D. in political science from an Ivy League university, ran into difficulty while lecturing about the Holocaust to students in the Middle East. She gradually realized that she was the only person in the lecture hall who believed that the Holocaust actually happened—but she had no idea what to say to her doubting students.

Don't confuse Judaism with ‘Jersey Shrore’

Thank you Rabbi Dov Fischer for the post title of the week.

Purim is around the corner, and the question arises: What's the deal with getting drunk on Purim? So here's the deal:

Mark Shea - the most interesting man on earth

He keeps making excuses for Lila Rose, while at the same time being a shill for Planned Parenthood. Amazing how one man could contain both points of view!

Pilcrows in the KJV

Apparently match liturgical readings in the Eastern Orthodox service. Weirdness!

(KJV is the King James Version of the Bible, for those not inclined to know such things.)

Someone tell Ed Peters that he is awesome

Because he is. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen so much ink spilled accusing a man of being wicked for simply pointing out a rather obvious application of Church law.

I have the feeling that few of the people castigating him would have objected to St. Ambrose's actions after the massacre at Thessalonica.

Just a friendly reminder from Mr. Shea and Mr. Paul.
